I came here in 1974 to attend Tulane, and we were sort of one of the darlings of American cities in those days. We didn't practice the bigotry of other deep south cities in the 1960's, and everyone seemed to get along very well. But the storm really turned us into a third world country for a while, and a string of very corrupt politicians has brought the quality of life here to very low levels. I incurred the wrath of the local police after I was interviewed the day after a man walking his dog was shot to death on my block (in full view of a non-working crime camera). When Fox News asked why I didn't call the police when I heard him being shot (at 8:03 PM), I told them the truth...that the police don't respond to 911 calls and haven't for years (it would mean having to write a report afterwards). I had called 911 about 5 times in the 1990s after shootings in the neighborhood, and not once did an officer respond. So I armed myself. Well, after that Fox report aired on TV and the radio over several days, the police were all over this neighborhood with blue lights flashing to show that they were around. No murders since then. It's a shame that they had to be embarrassed into action. I'm thankful that I have been shot...by someone.
