Jeffery a friend of mine moved to New Orleans to teach two years ago (at
Tulane where incarceration of students might be commendable but doesn't
happen much, I don' t think) and midway through his first year he called me
one day and said the place made him think of me because it was just like New
York in the 1970s. Every new reply of yours enlivens that sense of it now,
after the deluge. It was horrible, what happened, all that loss and
displacement and pain; and the political neglect was criminal, obviously,
and seems to continue. But from these days I suspect will arise a very rich
creative period.
