Steve,

I would say that a month of unreturned phone calls and ignored emails was 
sufficient tenacity. What finally worked was contacting the president of 
Leica USA personally. 

I only chime in here when someone who is a professional photographer remarks 
about how wonderful Leica service is. My observation, from experience, is 
that Leica serves professionals and does not serve amateurs no matter how 
much you paid for the camera and no matter what your warranty states. In my 
book, that sort of attitude is beyond deplorable. If you feel that amateur 
photographers somehow don't deserve getting a functioning camera and don't 
deserve a replacement for a non-functioning camera, then we differ on that 
point. Thank your lucky stars that you got one that worked.
