Hi Len,

If you make only small adjustments to a well exposed photo, 8 bit and 
16 bit will be essentially the same. On the other hand, if you are 
struggling to pull detail out of the shadows that you think you saw 
in the original slide, only 16bit will do. One of the most powerful 
tool in Photoshop, Curves, really shows the benefits of 16 bits, 
especially if you use it on individual channels. If you have a slide 
or digital image that is very flat, and almost everything is medium 
gray, the Curves tool lets you expand that with very good control, 
but you'll easily get banding with 8 bit files. 16 bits gives you a 
chance to rescue these types of shots.
