It's IEEE 1394, it's an industry standard. It's called Firewire by  
Apple and comes on every Mac. It's also a standard in the video  
industry I think...

The differences between the 4000 and the 5000 (I have used the 4000  
for 2 years and still have the 5000) is 1) speed and 2) Interface  
reliability. The 4000 is much slower than the 5000, but the Firewire  
interface was much more reliable than the USB.
