The people he's shooting look all kinds of ways but none is snarling at the camera in the manner of JD Salinger the day the boys from the NY Post jumped out in front of him from their van in Hanover or whatever the NH town was. So I'm talking about the big "them", the burghers and merchants and police; the "citizens" as William Burroughs put it. What I was essentially saying was: Since they're after him now, I'm on his side and I'm sure he's on the right track. It's a romantic kneejerk bohemianism in many ways but, in this age of zero counterculture, it beats all the alternative points of view I can see to choose from.
