Not a dumb question at all. It?s a function of the application. When
files are imported into lightroom, the application keeps a record of
where the files are physically held on your system. There are options
that you can set which can help LR ?decide? where to put files. Daniel
alluded to this in a previous post - LR will create
directories/subdirectories for files if you opt to move or copy them
from one file system (for example a cf card or usb disk) onto a local
hard disk.
It can get a bit confusing, but I find the as I using the package for
cataloguing images in the first place, it?s whyI use to find a shot. If
I need to edit the file in PS, then you just right-mouse click on the
thumbnail and select edit in PS. So there is rarely a need to physically
hunt through the file system to find a particular shot once they are
imported.
It?s similar when making a copy - just use the export function to export
a copy to another location on the hard disk.

Hope that helps

Mark
