Arche your post is a very neat capsule of those Southern manners.
Good for you. You would be very welcome in this laid back Aussie world and
I'm sure, Nathan's Dutch one.
Societies with tolerance and good manners ought to be the global standard.
Cheers
Hoppy

What Jim is refering to here is a comment I made,
off-list and to several people, to the effect that
popcorn-eating guy was a very rare critter, a
flambouyantly gay southern redneck. This was based
solely on my having stood next to him in line for 5-10
minutes, and I could be wrong.

That said, Southerners, by and large, have a fairly
high tolerance for individul eccentricity. That's what
makes it such a colorful place, and something I would
like to show in my work. But that's when taken in
small and managable doses. On encountering something
on the scale of weirdness of an anti-gun rally, an
ACLU convention, or a gay-pride parade, another social
instinct would likely kick-in, that is 'don't go where
you aren't welcome', and most folks would simply
choose to ignore it. We would call that 'manners'.

Of course there are always a-ho's who won't pass up on
a chance to make themselves obnoxious, but the South
has no monopoly there. I'm willing to bet even in
Holland there were a few 'counter-protesters'.
