I bought a card with the "real TI chips" and to my surprise, the whole setup works much better than the old Win7 machine with whatever firewire chips it had. Previously, the machine would not be recognized 30-40% of the time, and from googling, it seems to be a common problem. Now? Zero problem. Firewire is an "ancient technology", but OTOH, it will continue to work for many years to come, at least on the PC. Not familiar with the Mac (although I know some people are using firewire400->firewire800->ThunderBolt2->Thunderbolt3" chain of adapters....
