Interesting you used D76 at 1:3 at my college darkroom all the students ran 
it at 1:2 which it turned out was unheard of. The fact that it said 1:1 on 
the box and nowhere else seemed to make most everybody think there was a 
taboo on it. Nobody believed me when I told them I'd been running it at 1:2 
and came short of calling me a liar to my face. But the increase of 
sharpness was very nice although of course an increase in grain. Never 
thought about running it at 1:3 though lots of developers the photographers 
I knew diluted them as much as they possibly could often going past what any 
documentation showed. Rodinal 1:100 was an example of that at least at first 
(the 70's).  They didn?t give you any times for that or show it till way 
later. And it was the dilution of choice for sure for anybody who was cool 
at all.
Xtol 1:3 another which is way more cool at 1:3 and way less at anything less.
