May I make a suggestion:  You are the one that is going to be in the 
room.  There seems to be consensus here on gray.  But there is gray and 
there is gray.  Why don't you take a photo of the room, do the nifty 
things that programs will do, and then begin replacing the current wall 
colors with different colors and shades of gray.  I think that what you 
are looking for is a minimum of reflectance from the environment.   Just 
play around until you think you could live with it.  You are going to be 
the one that has to use it.
