I'm sure you did it like this, so I hope this isn't a 
stupid suggestion:

Mount the grip (batteries OK/contacts clean/no bits of 
protective plastic on battery poles?)
Then switch on the camera and take a look in the menu.

The German manual says that the GPS function only 
appears as active in the menu when the grip is mounted.
