Jim,

For b&w with OEM inks it is either a RIP such as ImagePrint ($$$$ even
if still available for that printer), or the Quadtone RIP (not much $
but big learning curve). I used custom b&w inksets, even a Medusa-like
CIS with tubes running into the printer. Excellent results if you print
every day. If not, clogs will make it landfill material shortly, like
mine. I am currently using a 2200 with ImagePrint for b&w. If I
upgrade it will be to a 3880 in the hopes that Epson has the handle on
B&W, otherwise prepared to spend another $900 on ImagePrint. Another
solution is to get individual b&w cartridges, and do all of your
printing over a couple of days to use them up, then put the OEM
cartridges back in to clean it out.
