Thanks Bob, Steve, Simon and Hugh for your comments and questions re GPS. It 
is very simple. My unit is a Garmin eTrex Legend HCx, meant for bicycling, 
hiking and similar outdoor activities. Steve, the software that came with 
the unit is Windows-only, but as you can see, it does not matter. After 
having saved the track at the end of the hike, the unit creates a file that 
can be read by Google Earth or a number of other applications. I simply 
copied that file to my Mac and opened it in Google Earth.

By using Garmin's web-based service, I can upload the track and have it 
appear with more information, which the link I put in the caption. Again, 
nothing OS-specific there.
