Actually, in the knee, Pseudogout is more likely than gout.
Feels the same, but different crystals:  Gout is uric acid, pseudogout  
is calcium pyrophosphate (also known as CPPDD)
A needle in the knee and sending the fluid for crystal analysis is the  
way to get a diagnosis.
The other diagnoses mentioned are evident on physical exam.
The initial treatment of both is rest and usually anti-inflammatory  
medicines ....
