Sure why not. Go look at the MTF yourself :-) Just remember to check
out the Zeiss' MTF too.

And your 2nd sentence is precisely what I am talking about. E-3 is a
system, so is the Leica M8/9. Each system has its constraints and
excellence. You say "strong low pass filter," I say stupid bullock
having to fit an UV filter. Yea, I screw them on, and just plain
forget about them, but don't go casting stones so fast :-) Lets not
even talking about the vignetting correcting or the colorfix program.

But it's OK, really it is. The Leica M is one of the best design
cameras ever, and the M8 carries that tradition just fine.

At the end of the day, which is an expression I hate, it's about how
comfortable the photographer is with their tools, because, that's when
the photographer will get the pictures :-O
