I am uncomfortable with that wording--it has that "My country, right  
or wrong" spin which is often used to shout down dissent.

Besides, I never felt that he was MY president or in any way  
represented what I believed.

I toyed with the word "elected" instead, and that did not work either.

How about "He was President of the United States?"
