Called the "magic" it was an unusual design that when collaped became a flat rectangle. I used to put it in a waterproof pouch and it could sit at the bottom of a bag. Not completely sturdy, its "strength" was the shape, but it held light film slr's and M's ok. I like the Welt Safe-Lok (two section) designs (in conjunction with a ball head). These have a larger lower section sliding over the upper, with locking levers at the top. The ones with rubber feet can be put in water or snow without crud getting into the mechanism, and the height can be changed fast on all three legs simultaneously, without having to manipulate many separate catches, or bending down. I'm hoping mine keeps going as long as I need it.
