I had a chance to see a few prints of Cuba by Evans. I saw them at
the Getty collection.
I had called ahead to make an appointment to research occupational
images from the turn of the century. They culled a number of images
for me to look at. A number of those were from the Cuba trip by
Evans. I can't say that I was overly impressed by them. If anything
they were rather amateurish in execution, and without coherence as an
essay. I suppose the recent curatorial hand has been salvifically
kind to him, by way of how his work has been presented in exhibition
and print. It has made it much harder to see some of the inherent
failings in the work.
