I shall try to make a jargon free response. When you say that you were scanning from Photoshop, I think that you were actually just using Photoshop to access whatever other scanning program you had. So the program that is not working may be at fault or changed rather than Photoshop. Alternatively you might be able to reinstall that driver. I think that you are using a flatbed scanner of some type? You might have the original software that came with it or you may be able to get a new copy from the manufacturer. Alternatively you could try Vuescan for example which you can trial for free. It works with a large range of scanners. The message about reloading Windows XP is related to the very large number of security updates which are incorporated. You can't undo those without cascading complications. While it would be technically possible to remove everything and start from scratch, you would be faced with a very long and painful process to get back to where you were. This would be a last resort and not necessarily solve your problem. Also the version of Photoshop that you mention is quite old and no longer supported. For simpler functionality and on an older computer you might be better to consider one of the lesser versions, for example Elements. When you describe saving your scans as PDFs, these are usable as an archive (aimed at hard copy printing really) or for compatibility but not at all designed for editing of the photos for example (nor text for that matter). If you aren't doing any significant editing or processing, it would be much more common and useful to save your scans as jpegs. However Vuescan will allow saving as PDF if that is what you require. Really the least useful option, especially if you don't have any program that allows for editing of PDF's (not just reading them). Why don't you dig out a fistful of Krugerrands or some pirate treasure from your cupboard and invest in a bit more modern setup for your own satisfaction? ;-) Cheers Geoff Aber Masse kann Klasse nicht ersetzen....Aber die R10 kommt. http://www.pbase.com/hoppyman/e http://gallery.leica-users.org/v/gh/ -----Original Message----- From: lug-bounces+hoppyman=bigpond.net.au@leica-users.org [mailto:lug-bounces+hoppyman=bigpond.net.au@leica-users.org] On Behalf Of Marc James Small Sent: Tuesday, 14 October 2008 15:33 To: Leica Users Group Subject: [Leica] OT: PC woes, Mac Guys Ignore I turn to you as this does have a bit of a photo twist. Allow me to keep it short. For the past five or six years, I have used Photoshop 5 as my scanning program. No, I do not understand the program but it does work to allow me to scan and to process PDF files. Or, well, it did. Several days ago, I tired to scan a document and the program would not load. I fought with Photoshop fr a day or so and then figured, well, something has gone wrong. I deleted it and tried to reload it only to be met with some "Photosle" program which seems to read every program disk as a photo disk. I then went to the pre-emptory reload of Windows XP and was advised that, as I had permitted Microsoft to send me the periodic updates, I could no longer reload the basic program. Any thoughts? Anyone know of a basic and free program which permits scanning of PDF files and basic manipuation of them? Or should I just do a basic dump of the entire hard-drive and start again from the ground? Thanks for your thoughts. Oh, yes! I have run SpyBot and CCCleaner and AdAware, all to no avail.
