Yes, makes sense....
I will go research what this takes. I have a Samsung SyncMaster 204B
monitor ( the last of the good non-wide screen LCD monitors). It came with
some SW..... maybe I can do this in SW only?
Somehow I doubt it.....

If you don't calibrate your monitor, then you have no idea whether you see
the same thing that we see when we're looking at your image. If a JPEG file
specifies a certain shade of gray, and your monitor is not properly
calibrated, it will show a different shade of gray. You said that you
weren't happy with the midtones and were going to mess with them. That's
pointless if you aren't looking at the same thing that we are.
