Ohmigod, I am sorry to hear about your hardships with the M8.

Yes, Canada Post limits insurance to only C$1000.

It's too late now, but a courier like FEDEX permits much higher insurance.

And I thought going direct to Purolator (NOT via Canada Post) permitted
insurance above C$1000.

None of that helps now.  

I hope they turn up a miracle for you.
