Just my pinch of salt and if I may intrude

 If the question is about protecting the glass because a cap was lost, 
there's been a long-standing tradition going on since Napoleon to this 
day in Armies round the globe and aimed at protecting what you have 
dearest when a soldier; namely. using c..d..s
FYI Gaps ends like N or is a mythical camera by Oly.
