If you want accurate focal length detection with the WATE you must set Lens Detection + IR filter on. Then every time you turn on the camera you get a pop-up menu to choose 16, 18 or 21 mm. And if you don't have a filter installed you will get Magenta corners. 2. If you just turn on lens detection, EXIF data will only say you have an 18mm lens. It would be better to have a lens detection + no filter choice. 3. When using the WATE and a filter, you can't use a hood unless you rig something yourself. Of course I don't know how useful the supplied hood is anyway.
