Subject: [Leica] Slim 486 Filter; Tri-Elmar; Lens Caps; Coding

I just got a B+W 489, and here is something I never thought about:

The filter is a SLIM, which means that you need to use a push on cap, and
that the Leica snap caps won't work. The filter comes with the classic
Schneider Krueznach Optik push on cap, and this actually works really well
for a Tri-Elmar. The metal lens hood can be slipped over the filter, and
can be stored in reverse with the Schneider cap on. I could not use the
Leica push on cap in this way, since the Leica cap is too deep.

So, for the Tri-Elmar, the SLIM filter is very good thing. The slip on cap
also seems to work fine for the the other lenses, in fact I like it better
than the snap cap over a filter. The 35mm and 28mm lenses have that hood
thing, so you don't need a separate cap.

I bet the Schneider replacement cap costs less than a Leica cap, too!

So far I don't see any magenta fringing on the Tri-Elmar, so I am not sure
there is a reason to rush out and get it coded.

Cheers,
Bob Rose
