David:

Now, BOTH of you are scaring me!So far, everyone has been reading my
tortured (read as, misplaced Leica loyalty) thoughts about the
PanaLeica and/or the Oly.

I see both of these cameras every day in my job (I'm in and out of
Best Buy, Circuit City and CompUSA stores 5 days a week from Seattle to
Bellingham...). They know me now; I Hear Them Call My Name...

What really gets me is the 2-lens Oly kit. The wide and tele Zuiko
lenses may not be made of CNC-machined brass and Schott crystal glass
billets, but the prints from the Oly sure look good. Go Figure.

But now I think about it, so do prints from the half-dozen or so Lumix
P&S digicams with DC Vario Elmarits.

I also suspect that Leica doesn't have much of a margin on the Digilux
3, hence no competitive coupon or discount incentives on the horizon.

By the way, I spoke at length to the Panasonic Rep at a Circuit City
north of Seattle yesterday; watch for two new Lumix digicams in the
pocket size with enhanced specifications.  Also, two new HD video cams;
one with disc drive, the other (same camera) with very high capacit SD
Card.

He said the Leica cachet on the lenses has been berry berry good for
Panasonic, forcing Sony (Carl Zeiss), Kodak and Samsung (Schneider) to
emphasize their "German Lens" connection.

This is a long way from Nikon's late 1950's S Zeiss lookalike RF bodies
fitted with Zeiss Jena 50mm new in the box.

Meanwhile, the word from Solms is, well, no word.

Cheers. I work all day today in Best Buy. I'm gonna wear ear plugs so
I can't hear the Lumix/Oly Siren Song...

For what it's worth, David, Leica did not write the M8's code. All
Leica will admit is that it was done by "a partner". By bets are on
Jenoptik, (still the) owner of Sinar.

The firmware in the Digilux 3 is written by Leica. Whether it is any
better is "in the eye of the beholder", but they claim better colours.

Were I to go that route, I'd buy the PanaLeica or even the Oly, first.
(Howard and Gary are very happy with their Olys!) Even if the firmware
in the Digilux 3 IS better, I can't see it being $800 worth of better!

Cheers!
