Jpeg is a lossy algorithim.

My understanding, from various people at Leica, is that the M8's 
compression is a lossless one.  The DMR (essentially the same size 
sensor) delivers a 19.5mb file.  The M8 delivers a compressed, 10.3mb 
file, if I recall correctly.  That is about a 47% compression... 
close the limit of various lossless compression techniques. If it 
were a lossy compression, such as .jpg, it could drop the file to a 
meg or two, but with a great loss of information.
