Graham,

Personally I prefer the second, which has the feel of a Victorian print 
about 
it. Some might call it a softness. What density are you scanning at , they 
look 
very sharp.

Lokinbg at the Vista shots I found that I notice a marked tint as a result, 
I 
presume, of the conversion from colour to B&W.
