As you say, it's madness. The designers who use the pics at the end of the day know this, but the people who buy the pics for them aren't savvy enough, and the people who sell the pics to the buyers just want to make sure their pics get chosen, so it perpetuates. It's especially mad when the 50mB file you make is JPEGed down by an agency to about 2mB to be FTPed to the customer! This happens a lot. P.
