If close to home is a consideration, try some of the off the tourist
path cities in Mexico, like Zacatecas.  Quebec City, the capital of
French Canada is picturesque.  In either place, you'd have trouble
believing that you are in North America.  Both Canada and Mexico offer
attractive exchange rates compared to the U.S. dollar and are cheaper
than most European destinations.  On the other hand, neither can
compare to most Asian destinations in terms of the purchase power of
your money..
