The fact that this is easier said than done should not all be laid at the feet of engineering. UI is the responsibility of a different class of engineer. I worked with one commercial UI specialist that was a former NASA heads up display engineer - talented young guy, and very much an "engineer." Why our moronic culture decides to routinely beat up on the blessed individuals who bring us things like cameras, anti-lock brakes, computers, electricity, safety razors, aerosol cheese and well, general material progress, I'll never understand.
