Subject: [Leica] Epson R-D1 price revealed (digest 408)

Now if we could only get Tina, Karen or Lea to give us the secret to doing
this. But they probably all take a sacred oath to keep all us guys under
their thumbs. ;-)

As to conning the LW - When you figure that one out, let me know how to
do it; not only doesn't removing all bits of plastic covering, etc., on
new equipment work anymore - I get questions a year after acquiring a
piece of new equipment about the "new equipment!" ;-)

I don't think anyone on here thinks that you hate Leica. You would not
be here if you did. So calm down, I was just kidding you a bit. I
think all of us here would like to see Leica continue, just because they
are the Little Guy in a Sea of Giants. However they are going to have
to make some changes in they way they do business and also some huge
jumps in advancing their products technology to compete in todays market
to survive.

I admit to finding the Nikon D70 very tempting, however none of my Nikon
lenses (2) will work with its electronics/metering, so I would have to
invest in a new set of lenses. The BOSS (She Who MUST Be Obeyed) gives
me evil looks as it is already. I'm still trying to figure out how i
can get a 24mm Elmarit for the M6 to take on the trip later this year.
Every time I bring it up or look at the lens catalog, she starts looking
at the drawer
where she stores the Rolling Pin. ;-) I've even tried to convince her
she
needs the D70 to replace her aging CoolPix 990 to take on the trip - No
Bites at all! ;-) I can just see the look she will give me when I tell
her I want the Digital R Back and what it will cost. Actually, I will
probably not survive. ;-)

All kidding aside - If a digital M was priced competitively with the
Nikon and Canon pro-DSLRs and delivered equal or better results I'd sell
my first, second, and third born to get it. No kidding. But call me
crazy, I will not pay a $2000 premium for the same quality image with a
red dot just to use my M lenses.

As to film cameras, IF I was - or ever do again - shoot enough film to
justify the investment, I would definitely consider selling my M6s to
get M7s, for the AE and for the improved viewfinder. But given how very
little film I am now shooting, I can't justify it.

If you or anyone else sees me as someone who 'hates Leica,' doesn't
think Leicas are good cameras, etc., you've pegged me incorrectly. I
think the M is a terrific photographic tool, and believe that most of
the current M lenses are the best available at their focal lengths. I
just don't have any emotional investment in the brand name, the company,
or it's future success - or future for that matter - any more than I do
in the company that makes Webber barbecue grills even though I own a
Webber. ;-) And, quite frankly, I think that anyone who buys Leica
products simply because they ARE Leica and carry the name Leica is
pretty damn foolish. :-)

Come on now, we all know that you would not buy another Leica. Unless
it was at least 10 years ahead of the competition, and selling at half
the price of the competition! ;-)

Right. But we're not buying D-100s, we'd be buying Rd-1s...a new
camera...I just want some price in the damn ball park of what the
comparable cameras are, or were when they came out. Which is to say that
there is no way in hell I will ever pay $5K for a Leica digital M body
UNLESS it truly set a new standard for digital capture....

But the D100 is NOT $2500 now. It's about $1900 CDN (< $1500 USD) as
advertised at Henry's, and probably a bit less if you shop around.

And the site where I dug up that price has a banner advertising a $200
price drop for the Canon 10D (now $1799.99 CAD).
