Unequivocally, the magnifier will help obtain the precise focus needed with
the Noctilux at F1.0

An no, the lens hood should be square.  If you have the older version with
the detachable hood then firmly but gently turn the hood while mounted till
it is properly orientated.  I don't have experience with the new version but
I presume that the built in can also be rotated.
