I don't know about the R8, but the central microprism on my SL2 MOT
(probably the same screen as SL) remains functional, provided that you keep
your eye well centered.  However, I find myself easier to focus on the
surroundings, bringing an area of sharpness to the subject, typically on the
ground for my subjects.
