A small vendor or someone with a new idea could rent a booth and perhaps break out orders. No smaller retailers, no traffic for the new business so they go away. The gorillas(B&H) in the US have everybody come to them. As to the public seeing the new stuff, the "paid" influences do that through various media. Of course the hoi poloi don't actually get to touch anything.
