that unit was a rebuild of a 1970 EMD GP40

MPM stands for Multi-Purpose Machine

This is a fascinating contraption?it has cabs on both ends, but is usually 
operated by remote control by the guy in the crane/loader that runs back and 
forth along the gondolas on track at the outside edge of the cars. The 
loader has interchangeable tools (magnet, pincer, scoop) that are stored on 
the short cab unit

looks like a caterpillar to me
