My crashed Mac Mini is now booked into the Apple store, and my trusty 
Macbook of 2009 vintage is now linked up to the large monitor so all is 
pretty much as it should be now. Ok, so the Macbook s a bit slower but 
perfectly workable so no major problems.

Thanks everyone who suggested various solutions.
