I am delighted to say that, following two visits to the Apple store, my 
computer is now up and running again. The problem was finally diagnosed as a 
faulty HDMI socket on the monitor. I have now connected the computer via a 
DVI connection and everything is working fine. I just have to restore 
everything from Time Machine now.
