Thanks, Frank, and Henning, and Sonny, John, Tina, and Brian!

I?ve got it figured out, thanks to all of you:

1. The original firmware in the M8 would not accommodate cards >2GB.
Apparently, contrary to my recollection, I had never used that 8GB card in
the M8.
2. I had not updated my firmware in a long time. I didn?t note which version
my M8 was using.
3. I couldn?t update my FW because the camera wouldn?t read any of my modern
cards?which I needed it to do in order to update my FW! Catch-22.
4. When I finally found and tried a 1GB card, the camera read it properly
and worked fine.
5. This morning it finally dawned on me that I could now update the FW,
using the 1GB card?duh!
6. I updated the FW to the current 2.024.
7. Now the camera will accept a 32GB card. I can take 3000 IR photos without
changing cards! That should be good for an afternoon, anyway?

Brand of SD card may no longer be an issue. Sonny said he couldn?t find a
list of compatible cards on the Leica website, and I found that the link
given in the M8 brochure on the website is dead.

And as I said before, here?s a tip for any M8 shooters who decide finally to
update their FW: The Leica website indicates that the update file is
presented as a .zip file that you need to unpack to yield a file with the
.upd extension. In actuality, what is presented on the website, and is
downloaded, is the .upd file itself. I was frustrated by trying to unpack
the downloaded file until I realized that it?s not a compressed file and is
to be used directly.

And in its charmingly exasperating way, Leica has chosen to provide the M9
FW update as a .zip file?and the M240 update as a non-compressed .FW
document!
