I thought someone told you of a non-Nikon repairer? I am not too surprised
that you did not work out what is wrong with it ;-)

I took my scanner completely apart and cannot figure out what is wrong with
it.  I thought maybe the bulb needed replacing but after searching all day
on the internet, I can find zero about any bulb or how to replace it.  I
read on one forum that Nikon will still repair the scanners through 2016, so
I packed it up and shipped it off.  I hope this is the last time I'll have
it repaired!
