Hi Oliver,
No question the image with the chairs is the magical one of compositional
interest! The other is just a nothing moment waiting for something to
happen? Not likely anything by the overall look of the scene! :-(

On Thanksgiving day our family of 6 (plus one Bernese) joined 30 other
adults and children (plus 4 smaller dogs) at the beach house of friends,
located in the Sea Drift community near Stinson Beach. 

The view from their deck is to the North. I made two images with my Leica M8
and the Elmarit 28mm:
