I have several hundred thousand images in my LR catalogs but the secret is
to have two catalogs.  One is archival for everything you have already
worked on.  It is huge but you only need it for viewing and searching, not
for developing.  The other catalog is 2014 for all of the photos taken this
year which I am still editing and working on.  It's much smaller and
faster.  I render 1:1 previews for that one so it's fast and easy to work
on.
