Betamax was superior to VHS in every way except sales.

The sales problem with Beta was due to Sony's unwillingness to license it to
other manufacturers. For years, you got a betamax from Sony dealers, of
which there were few outside of big cities like NYC. VHS was available from
any number of manufacturers in may stores throughout the US. A good example?
Panasonic made decent VHS machines that were widely available, and made them
a lot of money over the years. Panasonic cameras are harder to find that
Jimmy Hoffa, so the camera division has reported again a loss. Too bad, a
good product with good lenses, just too hard to find. Same with Olympus.

And of course, the wide availability of VHS in many sizes and flavors made
it the favorite of people that made pornos, and if it weren?t for pornos,
there wouldn't be home videos.
