UNCLE Ted:

The word boke/bokeh was borrowed by Mike Johnston (who was on this list
once upon a time, I believe) in the early 1970s from Japanese to describe
the phenomena, and probably didn't get popular usage until the 2000's when
photographers have time to really hone their craft - on the Internet chat
rooms and forums.

Probably why you didn't hear about it before.
