I really don't care either. But...

If you want to start your camera with a different number, take a picture on 
a newly reformatted card, then put that card into a card reader attached to 
your computer, and modify the file number of that last picture (same number 
of digits, format, etc to what the camera uses) to what you want it to be. 
Put the card back in the camera, and take some more pictures. They generally 
(for most cameras I've used) go up sequentially from that last number.
