The fit is too tight to shim more than a slice of the duct tape and the
result does not improve significantly, if at all.

One thing to keep in mind is that I shoot with my XPan 30mm all the time
and I use an external viewfinder there too, and I have gotten pretty good
at leveling the camera even just by feel. Oh the XPan VF that I use? The
Zeiss 15mm finder.

I just bought VC 25mm finder for $125. If you want to pay me $125, you can
have the dang Zeiss finder to play with and see if you can get it working,
but I'm not going to send the it to Zeiss and have them charge me big money
to have it repaired now.
