Aram,

it's an 3.4 GHz i7-2600K running on a Gigabyte z68P-DS3 motherboard.

I've tried the things suggested by Meino and got nowhere. The scanner
does, however work on my Macbook, so I think this will have to do.

An idea has just popped into my head about checking the Motherboard
settings to see if there's anything that can be done with the USB ports,
but I think that's clutching at straws to be honest.
