That was an unfortunate example, IMHO.  There are two interests: music, 
and then hi-fi.  Enthusiasts who know the works and the different 
interpretations seem to have little interest in extreme audiophile 
gear.  Those who listen for equipment differences are in another area of 
interest.  I have been through the audiophile phase (huge tube amps, 
cables as big as fire hoses and the like).  Interesting and all that, 
but not that relevant to the enjoyment of music.
