When I was a teenager in the 1970s, flying was expensive, a plane trip almost a special occasion. This was before the US market was deregulated in 1978 and the European markets during the 1980s. Today, it is so cheap that I don't think twice about flying up to the Netherlands for a weekend. Later this month I have to go to Madrid to take care of some private business--Madrid is 450 km away, so driving is very much an option. But a Ryanair round trip ticket is only 60 Euro. I will spend more than that on fuel driving, not counting 8 hours on the road. Flying has become many things, depending on your experience, but it has certainly become cheaper in most parts of the Western world, and I suspect, elsewhere as well.
