YES!

There certainly are TIMES and PLACES where lens, and camera protection is 
warranted.
Underwater
Flying hot metal
Dust storms
Salt spray
Paint spray
Blizzards

WHEN photographing welding and other flying HOT METALS events
with short focal length lenses
I use 6" plastic squares available from welding supply shops.
